Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move for Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan in the upcoming summer transfer window.

This move could potentially thwart Barcelona’s attempts to sign the German star. Gundogan’s contract with City is set to expire at the end of the season, making him a free agent and giving him the option to choose from interested clubs. Barcelona has shown interest in the 32-year-old for some time, as they have been actively looking for free agents due to their financial difficulties in recent years.

With the club needing to make cuts before the end of June to sign new talent and Sergio Busquets on his way out, they are looking to strengthen their midfield options, and Gundogan represents a viable, high-quality option at a low cost.

Arsenal target Ilkay Gundogan transfer

According to SportBild, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal could potentially thwart Xavi’s plans to sign Ilkay Gundogan, as the Gunners are also tracking the German midfielder. Despite being handed a transfer budget of over £200 million for the upcoming window, Arsenal still needs to strengthen several areas of the squad, including a forward player and an attacking midfielder.

Gundogan vs Premier League midfielders: 2022/23

Signing Gundogan as a free agent would allow the club to allocate more resources to these areas, especially if Granit Xhaka leaves. In addition to his quality, Gundogan’s Premier League experience makes him an attractive option for Arteta, who has previously recruited players from Manchester City, such as Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal’s interest in Gundogan could send a worrying message to Barcelona, who may not be able to secure the midfielder’s services.
